Meet the Residents of Onehouse!

January 6, 2023

We are thrilled to share our new series, "Meet the Residents of Onehouse," which shines a light on all the extraordinary talent that is part of Onehouse. This week we have Jeremy Crookston , a Founding Account Executive at Onehouse.

1) How did you first learn about Onehouse?

I worked with Vinoth and saw he had developed Apache Hudi. A few years later, I first learned about Onehouse when I came across Ali Ghodsi’s (CEO, Databricks) post discussing the now-evolving data lakehouse, recent investments and Onehouse.

2) What prior work/project experience were you most excited to bring to Onehouse?

I worked at my own startup Neoweather for 4 years. Then, I worked another 4 years at data streaming leader Confluent. Neoweather is a bootstrapped meteorology startup where I ran the company's operations as Founder/CEO and scaled the team through our initial product offering. In addition, we partnered with government and private clients. After seeing what a dent the data space was playing in meteorology, I decided to join Confluent to help companies harness the power of data in motion. My most recent experience at Confluent, where I helped them modernize their cloud infrastructure to incorporate streaming data, is pivotal to my role at Onehouse.

3) Why did you choose to join Onehouse?

From my perspective, rarely do you get a chance to carve out a new space in cloud infrastructure– and I believe this space is ready to boom. This is what makes me excited to work with Onehouse! So many companies want to use and operate their data in their data lake to take advantage of the efficiency and cost:

1. Different data applications will need different data freshness and query latencies, and not all are sub-seconds. Therefore Onehouse's incremental ETL allows you to use compute more efficiently and maintain incredible performance.

2. Data warehouses are not optimized for scanning large analytical workloads. Companies building data applications are reassessing their data infrastructure to balance efficiency with cost.

3. Many companies are leveraging the data lake to store their data. There are not many tools or platforms that help them analyze their data in the lake. This is where Onehouse can make a huge impact.

4. Lastly, Apache Hudi is a proven powerful open lakehouse platform. You can leverage your query engine of choice, whether it's Spark, Trino, Presto, Hive or a cloud data product. Many reputable and big companies use open-source Hudi for different data products, like personalization, dashboards, and much more. Don't take my word for it- check out the companies who back Hudi:

Walmart, Robinhood, ByteDance, eBay, Moveworks, Lyft, Shopify, Alibaba Cloud, Samsung, Zendesk, HSBC, Uber, Twitter, Disney, Snowflake and more.

4) What do you appreciate the most about being a part of the Onehouse team?

The Onehouse team is humble, smart and empathetic. Each day has been different, but the focus is clear - building an easy-to-use managed data lakehouse.

5) What about being in a startup environment motivates you?

It’s an honor to work with smart technologists to create something new. The fast pace of iterating with early customers is very exciting. Additionally, it brings an opportunity to create new systems, processes and learn from prior work experience. More personally, there are many more attributes I am excited to develop - focus, patience and more...

6) If you had to choose one of the five Onehouse culture values you feel speaks to you personally, which would it be and why?

"Be Customer Obsessed." My previous company, Confluent, demonstrated this. The brilliant team there understands the connection between customer obsession and business success. I am excited to continue this obsession with Onehouse.

7) What are you most excited to see happen as Onehouse continues to grow in 2023?

We have a pilot program where we are dedicated to making our early customers extremely successful with the Onehouse platform. Our customers will benefit from functionality not previously available on the data lake. This includes:

- the ability to easily append, delete and update data

- capitalize on specific database features such as acid transactions, concurrency and transformations to the lake

- fully automated table services that continuously schedule & orchestrate clustering, compaction, cleaning, file sizing & indexing to ensure tables are always ready

and much more

Thank you, Jeremy Crookston, for speaking with the team and all of your contributions to the Onehouse Family.

If you are new to Onehouse, or just beginning to understand Onehouse makes it possible to blend the ease of use of a warehouse with the scale of a data lake, or you’ve just read these words for the first time (welcome aboard! 🚀), let us take a moment to introduce ourselves and share a little history;

Onehouse delivers a new bedrock for your data, through a cloud-native, fully-managed lakehouse service built on Apache Hudi. Onehouse makes it possible to blend the ease of use of a warehouse with the scale of a data lake. Now you can build your lake in minutes, process your data in seconds, and own your data in open formats instead of being locked away to individual vendors.
